Now, you are actually looking for a vacuum casting factory.
This guide assumes you already know what vacuum casting is. This is not a primer. It is a no-nonsense field manual for procurement managers and engineers who are about to send out RFQs and want to avoid common supply-chain traps.
Here is what we’ve learned from reviewing thousands of RFQs and working with buyers who were burned by bad suppliers before they found us.

Phase 1: Before You Send Your First RFQ
Your CAD File Is Not Ready
Most buyers send over their initial CAD file and expect a flawless quote. Here is what happens next with a low-tier shop: the factory says “yes” to everything, quotes an unsustainably low price, and then—midway through production—discovers your wall thickness is too thin, your undercuts are too deep, or your tolerances are unrealistic.
The Fix Before You Send Anything: Review your design for manufacturability. Check wall thickness—2 to 4mm is ideal. Check undercuts—silicone handles them, but not infinitely. Check tolerances—±0.15mm is standard; tighter costs more and may not even be possible.
If you send a design with obvious issues and a factory doesn’t flag them during the quoting stage, they are not doing their job. If they flag them immediately with engineering feedback, that is your first positive signal.
Know Your Quantity—Really Know It
“Maybe 50 to 100 pieces” is not an actionable quantity for a silicone tooling project.
A single silicone mold realistically produces 15 to 25 high-quality parts. If you need 100 parts, the factory must factor 4 to 6 separate molds into the cost structure. If you need 500, vacuum casting might not even be the right process. Get specific before you ask for a quote.
Identify What You Actually Need to Test
Are you testing mechanical properties? Fit and assembly? Cosmetic presentation? Heat resistance?
Your testing requirements determine everything—material formulation, finishing requirements, tolerance targets.
If you only need visual samples, you can use a cheaper resin and skip post-curing. If you need functional parts that survive heat and load, you need specific engineering resins and post-processing. Tell the factory what you’re testing for, not just what you want made.
Phase 2: Evaluating Factory Quotes
Don’t Pick the Cheapest One
This sounds obvious. Yet procurement teams pick the cheapest one anyway.
Here is what ultra-cheap quotes buy you: the cheapest generic resin they can source, zero DFM review, rushed mold-making that causes part warping, and a vendor relationship that ends the moment your parts fail QC.
- A Reliable Quote Tells You: What specific resin—brand and grade—how many molds, how many samples, a clear lead time breakdown, and standard payment terms.
- A High-Risk Quote Tells You: One lump-sum number.
Ask This Question About Lead Time
“What is your precise lead time for first samples?”
If they say “it depends” without asking follow-up questions about your part size, complexity, and finishing requirements, they are not in control of their own shop floor. A reliable vacuum casting factory will analyze your files and give you a specific timeline. Most reputable factories deliver first-article samples in 5 to 10 business days.
Ask This Question About Mold Life
“How many parts will you pull from a single silicone mold?”
Listen closely to how they answer. A straight shooter will say something like: “With your geometry and this rigid resin, you’ll get 15 to 25 parts per mold. For your run of 100, we’ll make 4 or 5 molds to keep tolerances tight.”
A shop that’s overpromising will just say “50+ parts per mold!”—and leave it at that. No explanation. No caveats. Just a number that sounds good but doesn’t hold up on the shop floor.
Ask This Question About Payment Terms
“What are your payment terms?”
The global industry standard for low-volume manufacturing is 50% deposit to kick off tooling, and 50% upon sample approval before final shipping.
If a supplier asks for 100% upfront, you lose all leverage. The healthiest manufacturing relationships are built on shared risk: you pay to start, you approve the samples, you pay the balance before it leaves the dock.
Phase 3: What Happens After You Choose a Factory
The Sample Approval Framework
When you receive your first-article samples, do not approve them based on visual inspection alone. Run them through this explicit three-step gate before authorizing the full production run:
- Dimensional Accuracy: Measure critical dimensions against your 2D drawings. If they don’t match, stop and ask why.
- Material Traceability: And don’t just take their word for the material. Ask for the actual batch test data—the specific numbers from the pour that made your samples. A generic datasheet pulled off a website isn’t traceability. It’s a placeholder.
- Surface & Color Match: Check the finish too. Put it under proper lighting. Compare it to your Pantone code, your RAL reference, your texture standard. What looks acceptable in a factory’s dim workshop might not look acceptable on your assembly line.
If the samples are wrong, halt production. Never let a factory run the full batch on the promise that “we’ll fix it in the final run.” Samples are your ultimate point of leverage.
The Relationship After Delivery
The best factories treat your first order as a trial run—not a one-off transaction. They should actively provide:
- Full inspection data and dimensions report with your shipment
- Post-shipment engineering support if you discover fitment issues during assembly
- Saved master pattern data to streamline repeat orders
If they disappear into radio silence after shipping, they weren’t building a manufacturing partnership—they were just closing a transaction.
Phase 4: Factory Behavior Red Flags
They say “yes” to everything. No follow-up questions. No engineering critique. No DFM feedback. They just want your Purchase Order, and they’ll try to figure out the geometric problems after they’ve cashed your deposit.
They’re impossible to reach. You send an RFQ and wait two weeks for a reply. You ask a clarifying technical question and get a three-word response. Your project is clearly not a priority.
Your project is a black box. No digital photos of your master pattern or molds in production. No quality data. No updates unless you chase them.
They can’t explain their choices. “We recommend this resin.” When asked why, you get silence. They don’t offer alternatives or talk through mechanical trade-offs. They’re making guesses, not engineering decisions.
When things go wrong, it’s your problem. “We can’t mold this.” No attempt to adjust parameters, no solutions. Just a wall of helplessness, leaving your engineering team scrambling.
What a Good Factory Actually Looks Like
A reliable vacuum casting factory treats your project like a collaboration—not a transaction.
They review your design before quoting. They point out potential issues, even if it means less immediate work for them. When they recommend a polyurethane resin, you don’t just get a generic name—you get a rationale based on your part’s loads, environment, and geometry.
If a problem pops up during production? They don’t throw their hands up. They come back with a path forward, a tool modification, or an adjusted gating strategy. You get proactive photos and updates without having to chase them. They see the first order as the start of a relationship, not the end of a transaction.
