Custom Urethane Parts Sourcing Guide: What Every Buyer Must Know Before Sending an RFQ

But sending an RFQ without knowing the right questions to ask? That’s how projects go over budget, miss delivery, or end up with parts that don’t quite work.

What Actually Are Custom Urethane Parts?

Custom urethane parts — think rollers, bushings, seals, scraper blades, wear pads, and metal-bonded components. These aren’t off-the-shelf items. They’re cast to your exact geometry and performance requirements.

The material itself is flexible — literally. Depending on the formulation, urethane can feel as soft as a rubber band (20 Shore A) or as rigid as a hard hat (75 Shore D). You dial in abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, or vibration dampening — whatever your application demands.

Common applications include conveyor rollers, suspension bushings, scraper blades for material handling, wear pads on heavy equipment, gaskets, and urethane-to-metal bonded parts like wheel assemblies.


Polyurethane vs. Rubber: Why Engineers Are Making the Switch

A lot of buyers still default to rubber because it’s familiar. But familiar isn’t always cheaper.

The math is simple: if you’re dealing with heavy loads, abrasive surfaces, or chemicals, switching to polyurethane usually pays for itself in fewer changeovers and less downtime.

We’ve seen plants cut replacement frequency by more than half just by swapping rubber rollers for urethane. The upfront cost might be higher — but the total cost over a year is almost always lower.


Getting the Hardness Right (Durometer)

Hardness is the single most important number on your RFQ. Get it wrong, and the part fails — no matter how well it’s made.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet:

Here’s what we tell our clients at Yanmee: a durometer number on a spec sheet is helpful. But a 30-second video of your actual operating environment — load, speed, what the part contacts — is way more useful. We’ve recommended different hardnesses more than once after seeing a part in motion versus just reading the drawing. If you can send that, we can get much closer to the right material on the first try.


Urethane Casting vs. Injection Molding: Which One Makes Sense?

A lot of RFQs start with the wrong process assumption. Here’s the reality:

The short version: urethane casting is the fastest route from CAD to functional parts — without sinking five figures into steel tooling upfront.

That matters if you’re still validating a design, need bridge production before committing to hard tooling, or just don’t have the volume to justify injection molding.

What to Actually Put in Your RFQ

We get RFQs every week that miss one or two of these — and it always adds extra email back-and-forth. Save everyone time by including:

  1. Drawings — 2D PDF with dimensions and tolerances, or 3D CAD (STEP/IGES works best)
  2. Application notes — What does the part do? What does it bolt onto or contact?
  3. Material requirements — Durometer (Shore A or D), operating temperature range, chemical exposure, and any certifications needed (FDA, UL, etc.)
  4. Quantities — Initial order quantity + estimated annual volume
  5. Timeline and budget — Target delivery date and a rough price range if you have one

The more specific you are on #2 and #3, the faster we can quote — and the fewer surprises come up later.


Polyester vs. Polyether: The Detail That Trips Up Most RFQs

This is one of the most overlooked choices in custom urethane — and it matters a lot.

So when you send your RFQ, don’t just tell us what you want it made of — tell us where it lives. Is it outdoors? Submerged? Exposed to hydraulic fluid? That’s what determines the right call.


Supplier Red Flags: What to Watch Out For

Not every custom urethane shop is the same. Here are a few things that should make you pause:

  • They can’t explain the difference between polyester and polyether when you ask
  • They’re vague about lead times — “it depends” without giving you a range
  • They don’t have any examples or case studies from your industry
  • They won’t tell you how many shots a silicone mold lasts (usually 20–50)
  • They start tooling without sending back DFM (design for manufacturing) feedback on your drawing
